Mission Statement

To assist elderly persons of Hardy County in identifying and effectively developing their skills, potential abilities, and personal resources so they may continue to live an independent, purposeful, safe, and healthy lifestyle in their own homes.

The Past

In the fall of 1973, a group of Hardy County citizens met to form a committee on aging.
Meeting with a representative of the West Virginia Region VIII Planning and Development Council, the group subsequently filed an application with the Secretary of State for a Charter. Citizens signing the application were Phoebe Fisher, Ralph Bean, Winston Teets, Bruce Macbeth, and Leslie Barr. A Charter was granted on November 15, 1973.
In 1974 Phyllis Helmick of Moorefield was employed as Director of the newly established Hardy County Committee on Aging. She continues service as Executive Director and as a county leader in the continuing endeavor to improve both the quality and quantity of service to all senior citizens of Hardy County.
One year later, in 1975, two surplus trailers were obtained and located on a vacant lot at 400 Spring Avenue in Moorefield to serve as the Hardy County Senior Center.
Following the opening of the new Hardy County Public Library, the old building was purchased, and in 1978 this building on Winchester Avenue in Moorefield became the new Hardy County Senior Center.
It served until the fall of 1990 when the construction of the new Committee on Aging building was completed on Spring Avenue. The state grant of $386,300 was supplemented with funds raised by Hardy County Citizens for the construction and furnishing of the new building.
Senior Citizens of Hardy County were most generous in donating their time and energies to a multitude of activities such as bake sales, yard sales, craft sales, entertainment, and donations to assure the construction and opening of the new Hardy County Committee on Aging building at 409 Spring Avenue in Moorefield.
The new Senior Center was dedicated and ready to service Hardy County Senior Citizens on September 10, 1990.

The Future

The Hardy County Committee on Aging will continue to strive to improve and grow as they continue to meet the needs of our Hardy County Senior Citizens.
To attract people with ideas, talents, and energies will always be a goal of the Hardy County Committee on Aging. With new people, the Committee on Aging can continue to face the challenges of the future by expanding services, new programs, and funds to meet the continuing changes in the needs of our people.

Health and Wellness Center

The Health and Wellness Initiative

For its participation in the Plan of Action on Rural Aging proposal, Hardy County planned to design, develop and implement a program of health promotion and best practice strategies in rehabilitation and preventive protocols. It targeted elderly clients who have a history of stroke, heart disease, and/or diabetes and who will voluntarily enroll in the program. These clients are drawn from a poll of those already accessing services throughout the Hardy County Health and Wellness Center. The Center is a fully equipped modern facility with an aquatic therapy capacity, exercise room, physical therapy resources, and an education and training conference room. It is, in these aspects, a state-of-the-art facility. The Health and Wellness Center was the operational site for the project and continues.

The Hardy County Health & Wellness Center’s primary goals are to provide:

• Personalized wellness and fitness programs for physical activities
• Education that will enhance knowledge of disease processes and activities for personal well-being/fitness
• Rehabilitation through physical therapy, occupational therapy, and exercise physiology
• Opportunity for personal growth through interactions with others having similar problems
